Chlamydia

What is chlamydia?

Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) and is the most common STI in Australia.

Many people who are infected do not have symptoms of the disease but can still spread it. If chlamydia is not treated, it can cause problems like infertility and chronic pelvic pain.

How could I get chlamydia?

It is caused by a bacteria passed by having unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex with someone who has the infection. It can also be passed between an infected mother and baby during vaginal birth.

The people most at risk of getting chlamydia are:

  • Sexually active young men and women
  • Anyone who has recently changed sexual partners
  • Anyone who has recently had another STI.
