Dr Rebecca Alvarez wins the RACGP 2024 Growing Strong Award

Congratulations to all the RACGP National Awards winners, who were celebrated at a ceremony at GP24 in Perth.

The RACGP Awards are an annual awards program designed to recognise those GPs, registrars, supervisors, medical educators and practices who are demonstrating excellence in general practice and going the extra mile for their communities.

Amongst the winners was Dr Rebecca Alvarez, who received the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health, 2024 Growing Strong Award.

Rebecca is a proud Ngunnawal woman and First Nations doctor based at Townsville Aboriginal & Islander Health Services (TAIHS). She enjoys the diversity of work that general practice provides her and the ability to work within a multidisciplinary team to advocate for mob.

“I appreciate being able to provide a service that extends beyond the physical health to include a focus on the spiritual, mental, social and emotional health”

She draws inspiration from First Nations trailblazers such as Uncle Dr Louis Peachey, one of the first Indigenous doctors and a JCTS Board Member.

“He has paved the way for mob to pursue a career in medicine and general practice. His continued tireless work and advocacy is something I aspire to work towards.”
