Eczema is a common skin condition that can make your skin feel dry, itchy and irritated. It can also be called allergic eczema, atopic dermatitis and atopic eczema.
It can appear in the creases of your elbows, behind your knees, wrists and ankles but depending on the type of eczema, it can occur on different areas of your body such as your arms, legs, chest, back, face and neck.
Eczema can affect both children and adults and may run in families. The good news is eczema can improve as you get older.
Doctors aren’t exactly sure what causes eczema, but there are things that can trigger eczema and make it worse such as:
- Heat/overheating
- Being run down from a virus or stress
- Chemicals, perfumes or soaps
- Certain clothing fabrics like woollen fabrics directly on your skin.
