NAIDOC Webinar 2024

Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2024 – Keep the Fire Burning, Blak Loud & Proud, Joint Colleges Training Services, Dr Curtis Roman presented a special NAIDOC webinar.

The 2024 theme celebrated the unyielding spirit of our communities and invites all to stand in solidarity, amplifying the voices that have long been silenced.

In his presentation, Curtis discusses Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity from a historical and contemporary perspective and focused on:

  • The resilience Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have applied in retaining a strong and proud identity.
  • How terms such as ‘Aboriginal’ and ‘Indigenous’, have been placed on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
  • How these terms have attempted to eliminate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people’s pride in their identity.

Dr Curtis Roman is the Project Liaison Officer for Joint Colleges Training Services (JCTS) and is based in the Northern Territory. He is a proud Larrakia man, born and raised on Larrakia country in Darwin. Curtis is the first Larrakia person to graduate with a PhD from Charles Darwin University and the first Indigenous man to graduate with a PhD from CDU.
