What is cancer?
Our body is made up of cells that constantly grow, divide and breakdown in a controlled way.
Cancer is when our cells grow abnormally and spread out of control, due to defects in the cell and our bodies ability to stop the spread of the abnormal cells. Cancer can develop in almost every part of our body, but the way they grow and spread depends on their specific type.
Cancer can be caused randomly, or by us damaging our cells with things like too much sun exposure, tobacco or alcohol.
Why do we screen people for cancer?
Cancer screenings help find any cancers early or before any serious symptoms appear. Different cancers are checked for depending on your age, gender, family history and any concerns you might have.
