Pharyngitis

What is Pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis is when your throat feels sore or scratchy. It can make it hard or painful to swallow, talk, or breathe. Sometimes it’s mild, but other times it can feel very painful.

What causes Pharyngitis?

A sore throat occurs due to swelling (inflammation) in the back of your throat (the pharynx). It can be caused by:

  • Bacteria or viruses (like colds or the flu).
  • Breathing in smoke, polluted air, or chemical fumes.
Dry air or allergies (hay fever).
  • Heartburn (stomach acid coming up into the throat).
Swallowing sharp or rough foods that can irritate your throat.

How did I get a Pharyngitis?

Pharyngitis can spread from person to person, especially through coughing, sneezing, or close contact with someone who is sick. Sharing cups or utensils, as well as exposure to cigarette smoke or polluted air, can increase your risk of developing a sore throat.
